The reason I am researching this is that having just started a blog with a forum, I installed the canned social media buttons. I then “liked” or “recommended” my own posts. I was very surprised to see that more than 1/3 of my traffic was immediately coming from Reddit. Now I am learning how it all works.

I do not yet know how to optimize it, but I do know it works to drive traffic.

David – You are right, larger sites usually use “nofollow” tags, but if you look at the page source for reddit, links are getting full SEO juice.

Harrisdavid – Great question. In either case, you need to submit remarkable content to make it to the 1st page, which is where you’ll see the spike in traffic. With that being said, the advantage for submitting is that the links pass SEO credit, and therefore help improve your search rankings. If you’re already taking the time to create content, spend the extra 4 minutes to submit it to Digg & Reddit.

I am sure that Links and rankings gained from social media “stick”, Social media links are most effective for mid to long tail keywords. Getting your most desirable keywords into the Digg title is crucial since subsequent links will use it as for the anchor text.
