Stop Facebook Liking Yourself

by Matt Sullivan on September 30, 2011

Stop Liking Your Own Facebook BrandI saw a tweet from @sandaproulx where she said “Brands: Please stop liking your own Facebook comments”, and I instantly knew what she meant. Essentially, a brand that “Likes” themselves on Facebook is tantamount to telling people how awesome you think you are after you do something. Outside of scoring a touchdown, this is generally frowned upon.

But, I’m pretty sure that in most cases this is an honest mistake. It probably goes something like this: Mr. Marketer from Awesome Brand logs into Facebook, uses Facebook as Awesome Brand, and posts a comment. Then Mr. Marketer returns to using Facebook as himself and hits “Like” on his Awesome Brand comment. Little does he know about a default setting that says:

Always comment and post on your page as Awesome Brand, even when using Facebook as Mr. Marketer

I understand what Mr. Marketer was trying to do – simply kick-start getting some “Likes” tossed to Awesome Brand. Instead, it appears that Awesome Brand is the guy that walks into the party and immediately says “I’m awesome.”

Author’s Note: Yes, I know I’ve done this before. But only on rare occasions, and usually meant as a joke.

Thankfully this setting is easy to change.

Step 1: Log into Facebook and go to any Page where you are an Administrator.

Step 2: Click the “Edit Page” button in the top-right corner.

Step 3: Select “Your Settings” from the top of the left-hand column.

Step 4: Uncheck the “Posting Preferences” box.

You’re done!
